Radio Happenings 7-28-24

The Newsletter has not been sent out for a while. I apologize for that but on the 13th, we traveled to our old home town to attend a banquet celebrating 100years of a club… We were there for the 75th, so it was reasonable to go  to the 100th..

It was a good time with about 110 old friends…some were ham friends.. A short visit … we headed back to Green Bay the next day..Sunday…    Well . Monday was not very nice to us.. nor Tuesday.. good friend W9LAR called and asked if we got ill.. Yep… He and his significant other both tested positive for Covid..   Well so did we.       14  days later and we are doing pretty well.. still some lost lung capacity..  Hope you didn’t mind the note… been locked in too long..  Back To Radio..

The Club is experiencing a good problem!  The meetings are packed… I had to make sure that I did not put some free gifts in the meeting notice.. Thanks  to Randy AB9 QC and Bill KB3KYH for bringing in some folding chairs from home to help with the overflow..

But we are a busy Club… Things to do…. Just getting past the successful HamFest -Then Field Day.. Great time!! And a Brat Barn on the 13th of July.

    1)  The first week of August is when Amateur Radio operators from all  Canada and the U.S. activate Lighthouses commemorating National Lighthouse Day. This Special Event gives us an opportunity to operate from a lighthouse.. The ARLHS has designated the 3rd and 4th for that activity ... For the last 8 years, we have activated the Grassy Island Range Lights located at the GB Yachting Club.   Can you help? AUG>3RD Open from 9 -1…  For more information 920-227-3235       http://greenbayyachtclub.com/newsandinfo/grassy-island-range-lights/

      2) Two years ago we activated the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse for the event and did fairly well. This year we have a multi band vertical mounted on the top rail by the light 49 ft above Lake Mich. The coax is in place.. Just have to connect a radio..  We are in need of one or two persons to help operate…AUG 3RD from 10 AM to 2PM. Can you help there? .. The lighthouse persons are very nice and helpful.. As of today, Larry K9IQ will be there… but we should have at least one more.. just think- 85 degrees in GB but only 73degrees out there by the water…in doors… There is a small park at the end of the dock.. bring the family… If you can help …Or questions … 920-227-3235 Thanks .. https://www.kewauneepierheadlighthouse.org/

RADIO HAPPENINGS 7.9.2024

Have you noticed that the rain stops just long enough for us to cut the grass?  Hope everyone found some time to enjoy some of the Independence Day weekend..  Radio conditions have been remaining just about the same this month but just every once in a while, there is an opening and all is good again..

Here is an early Spotlight on the Club President..>>>>>
  Hello Club Members…

Did you make it out to Field Day?  If you did, I’m sure you had a great time.  Despite a lot of rain during our set up, everybody pitched in to put up the antennas and get powered-up, in time to go “radio active”.  The bands weren’t too cooperative, but we still made lots of contacts.  Probably the most fun was in the conversations and visiting among those of us who were there. (A much bigger crowd than last year…) In many ways, that’s one of the compelling features of Field Day.  That and the food.  Thanks to Chef Paul, KB0P we enjoyed some very tasty burgers and brats that went well with the many dishes brought in by the members.  Special thanks to   Gene, AB9GK, Wes, W9WES, Dave, N8KQS and everybody else who helped make this a big success.  There is one other member who went above and beyond to make sure things were “just right” and that’s Arlene Radtke, KC9CDX.  She got there early on Saturday and made sure the facility was clean and organized and ready for our event.  Thank you, Arlene!  We’ll have a complete Field Day report at our July meeting.

As you may recall, we have a Brat Barn scheduled for Saturday July 13. This one will be at the East Side Festival on Steffens Court, next to Menard’s in Green Bay.  Keith, KS9WI needs volunteers, so be sure to let him know you if can come out and help.  Working a Brat Barn is fun and a good way to meet fellow club members.  The money we’ll earn from this event will go towards repairs to the club communications trailer.  We’ll go over the details at the July 11th club meeting.

I hope to see you at the meeting on Thursday, July 11th.  The agenda items will include Field Day after action report, the July Brat Barn, Lighthouse activations, and the club picnic. Be there for the Tech Talk at 6:30. This month’s Tech Talker will be Walt, KE9TT who will be telling us about wire antennas.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions about our club.

See you at the meeting…73,

Bill, KB3KYH

RADIO HAPPENINGS 07.01.2024

Credit: Pickles by Brian Crane, September 28, 2019

Welcome to July!!! We ended June with a nice day... 73 light breeze and no rain... The 4th of July is just a few days away and as we toured the farm areas, it does  not seem as if we are going to see the corn "knee high by the fourth of July" . But we should have  great sweet corn when the Club Picnic happens.. (stay tuned.)
A short "look back" before we get into what is coming up..
Tech Talk at the last meeting was by the President of RT Systems. This company provides Ham Radio programming software. Rather than trying to put all the frequencies and menu items in by hand, you fill in the blanks on your pc and then download it in .... The demo was interesting..
Field Day.. June 22-23... The group gathered at the Oak Street Cafe' at 8am.. the rain had just begun.. Shortly after 9am we headed out to Osprey Point Park.. The East River had just begun to rise next to the driveway ingress. There was a good size bunch of helpers for setting up,  Some of our newest members dug right in.. put up the antennas, ran coax, setting up the radio stations under the shelter just out of the spray of the rain.. had to move one into the building and the third in the EComm trailer.. Used two OCF dipoles, a fan dipole and a 19ft vertical.(not all at the same time) Later on some others came and set up another vertical to use.   At first, one dipole that was parallel to the big power lines had major noise on one radio but another radio was able to null that out.. Ran 3A on 40, 15 and 20 meters.. the CW was mostly on 40 meters. otherwise voice was used on all of them ..
Propagation was poor.. the best run was by holding one frequency and calling CQ....
The dinner was very well attended.. as well as the camaraderie after... 12:30am almost all folks had left- so the two members that were still there, closed down and took a nap until 4:30am .. put on the coffee pot and started back up.
Although there was rain most of the time, people kept dropping by.. and we added a few new members ... Welcome !!
The end of a great day on Saturday, was highlighted by the bright sky filled rainbow ... almost like someone saying " Job well done ....
That "job well done" was expressed by the park custodians after checking the park on Monday after.. Thanks to everyone that made that happen.
The forms have been filled out and sent into the ARRL...
Thanks to everyone that helped before, during and after......

      Coming up...
July 10th  - Siren Test Net ... 1145 check in .. Siren at noon unless a storm in the area...
July 11th - GB Mike & Key Club Meeting... Tech Talk at 6:30 Meeting at 7pm ..
